How to use it

Scattered chapters, bound into one.

Three days away, one summer, a child’s year.
Give the chapters you choose a title and a foreword, bind them, and you have a book you can listen to from the start. Books can be made on every plan.

Choose chapters, make a book

  1. Select

Tap ⋯ (More) at the top of the bookshelf and choose Select, and you can pick chapters. Select is also in the menu when you touch and hold a chapter.

While you are selecting, every chapter is shown as cards or a list, whatever view you usually use. Chapters already in a book can be chosen too. A book holds up to 25 chapters.

  2. Create book

When you have chosen, tap Create book at the bottom.

  3. A title, and a foreword

Enter a Book title (a book cannot be made without one). The Foreword is optional: a few words of your own, shown on the cover.

  4. Order the contents

Chapters start in the order they were taken, oldest first. Drag the handle at the right to reorder them. With VoiceOver, use each chapter’s actions Move up and Move down. When the order is right, tap Create.

The chapters stay in Memories after they go into a book. The same chapter can go into as many books as you like.

Last month, bound as it is

At the bottom of Last month in review, which appears on Home at the start of each month, is Bind these into a book. The photos you kept coming back to last month, and one from the same month last year, become its chapters.

The title is the month’s name, and the foreword is the letter for the month that Scia sent you, already filled in (left empty if no letter came that month). The chapters stay in the order shown in Last month in review. You can change all of it before you create the book.

Opening a book, listening

Your books appear when you choose Books from the bookshelf’s Filter (in the card and list views). The cover is a collage of the chapters’ photos.

Open a book and you find the cover collage with the title and the number of chapters at the top, then the foreword and the contents. At the very bottom, Listen from the start reads it aloud from chapter one onwards. Tap a chapter in the contents to open just that one.

Changing it later

Remove or reorder chapters
From Edit at the right of the contents (books of two or more chapters). Drag to reorder; swipe sideways to remove. A removed chapter stays in Memories.
Change the title
Rename in the book’s ⋯ menu at the top right.
Change all the voices
Change reading voices in the ⋯ menu changes the reading voice of every chapter at once.
Copy it into another book
Duplicate book in the ⋯ menu. Keep the original and make a version with a different title or chapters.
Delete the book
Delete in the ⋯ menu. Only the book goes; the chapters stay in Memories and the photos in the Photos app.

Handing a book to someone

A book, like a single photo, can be handed over as a photograph you listen to. From the share button at the book’s top right, choose Save photo with QR or Send from LINE (Send link on an iPhone without LINE). The QR is set into the photo of chapter one. The person who receives it needs no app; it plays from the start in their browser. More in Looking back, and giving.

Because publishing a book makes an AI voice for each chapter, it needs the Supporter plan or above. The free trial (one photo) cannot be used for a book. Books of up to 25 chapters can be published, and while one is published, its title and chapters cannot be changed and it cannot be deleted.

Sharing photos with family

To have the photos you take reach your family too, use a Shared Album in the iPhone’s Photos app. The photos Scia saves to the “MimiSeka” album are added to the shared album you choose as well.

  1. Make a shared album

In the Photos app’s Albums, make a new shared album and invite your family (“MimiSeka family”, say).

  2. Choose it in Scia

In Scia’s Settings, under Sharing, turn on Auto-add to Shared Album, then choose that shared album in the Album row that appears.

Inviting people and who belongs are handled in the Photos app. To stop, turn the same setting off.

One at a time, they are memories.
Bound and heard through,
——they become a season.
