Looking back, and giving

What you really wanted to keep from that day.
——Say it, and it comes back.

Memory fades as the days go by.
Words you put into a voice do not.

Looking back

The days you have half-forgotten are the ones it helps you reach.

Scroll down the home screen and, after today's and yesterday's photos, you reach Looking back. Up to two photos are offered here, taken on the same day or around the same time in an earlier year. Each is marked with when it is from: “3 years ago”, “Around this time, 1 year ago”.

Tap one and its photo screen opens. Under the title sit the date and time it was taken, and the name of the place. Tap the place name to see it on a map.

From “that autumn”, or from “that town”

To search for yourself, switch how the bookshelf is shown.

The photos you take gather on the bookshelf. The button at the top left of the bookshelf lets you choose how to view it: Home, Cards, List, Calendar, Map or Region.

If you remember the season, use Calendar. Only the days with photos are filled in, so the one from “that autumn” is quick to find. If you remember the place, use Map or Region, and the photos from “that town” come up together.

All six views are available on every plan.

Giving

The person receiving it needs no app.

  1. From Share, a photograph you listen to

On the photo screen, press the Share button at the top right and choose Save photo with QR or Send from LINE. Pick the text to publish (story, description or diary), and that photo becomes a photograph you listen to.

  2. A QR to hand over, a link for far away

Save photo with QR stamps a QR code into the corner of the photo and saves it to your album. Print it and hand it over, or hang it on the wall. A photo in an album becomes a memory you can listen to.

Send from LINE sends a link rather than the photo, so it reaches family who live far away just as it is.

  3. All they do is point a camera

The person receiving it reads the QR with their phone's ordinary camera, or taps the link. The photo opens in a browser and the reading begins. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

How long it stays up, and how to stop it. For a QR, choose 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or 1 year. To stop it, use Stop QR publishing from the same Share button. After that, anyone who opens it is told the page is no longer public.

A link sent from LINE cannot be stopped partway. It can be listened to until it expires (7 days to begin with; 3 to 30 days in Settings).

The same photograph, for people who cannot see

The description is written into the photo file itself. In the iPhone Photos app it becomes the caption, and for people who use VoiceOver, those words are read aloud.

With Post to X with ALT from the Share button, the same description goes along as the image's alternative text (ALT). When the photo comes by on someone's timeline, a reading voice tells them what is in it.
