How to use it

The same photo, in English too.

For family across the sea, for a friend who does not read Japanese.
Translate the story and the description into English, and listen in an English voice. A translation can become a photograph you listen to, too.

Translating a chapter into English

  1. Translate text

On the photo screen, tap ⋯ at the top right, choose Translate text, then choose the story or the description.

  2. Read it, and correct it

The translation is made as soon as the screen opens, and shown beside the original. The title and the story’s closing lines are translated too. You can change the translation into your own words.

  3. Choose a voice, and save

Choose an English voice under Voice and it reads a sample. Save makes the voice first, then keeps the translation.

Diaries are not translated. They are kept in your own words, just as you spoke them that day.

Switching between Japanese and English

Once translated, use Text language in the photo screen’s ⋯ menu to switch between Japanese and English. The text and the voice change together.

For a book, Translate book in the book’s ⋯ menu translates every chapter at once. Translations you have corrected yourself are not overwritten. A book with translations lets you switch language on its cover.

Hand over an English chapter as a photograph you listen to, and the person who receives it hears it in English.

If the English voice is the iPhone’s own (the system voice), it plays on your iPhone, but the listening page has no voice. For chapters you mean to hand over, choose a multilingual voice.

Which plan

Translation is on the Master plan. On other plans Translate text still appears in the ⋯ menu, and tapping it opens the plans screen. For now, English is the only language it translates into.

In another language,
that day still arrives
——as close as a voice.
